The true harvest of my daily life is somewhat as intangible and indescribable as the tints of morning or evening. It is a little star dust caught, a segment of the rainbow which I have clutched. ~Henry David Thoreau, Walden |
| One universal habit and one that infiltrates nearly every aspect of our lives is procrastination. Nearly everyone has procrastinated about something at least once in their life. Our mere existence is so complex that many of our dreams are left to wait. While we know what we NEED to do and what is important we often allow outside pressures of the world lead us astray. For one to get balance in their life... they need only to take a moment or two and consider what our thought will be as we take our last breath.... all the worries... petty annoyances.... financial concerns... disagreements and other frustrations will likely as not seem insignificant. We most likely will be thinking of our loved ones... and our life in general.. and if our life was one that left an impact on the rest of the world. Whatever we spend those last few moments upon will most likely be what truly matters to us. While our attention is drawn momentarily to the end of life... let' use this simple exercise to revamp our thinking. These contemplations on the end of our life... serve to point out that we are indeed masters of our own thoughts and perspectives... therefore we are masters of our own existence. Having said that... there is really nothing to prevent us from shifting our focus right now or any time for that matter. We can make the choice to spend more time and energy on what gives us joy and what gives our lives meaning. We can spend more time with loved ones and do more of what we enjoy. Making this choice may not always be easy... and obviously there will inevitably be times when certain circumstances interfere with this resolution.... yet even then we do not have to accept these times as indications our priorities are not in alignment with who we really are... and what we really need or want. Sometimes .... the only real way we can see the beauty of life is when we remind ourselves that life as we know it is short... Gandhi said: "Live as if you were to die tomorrow." His words are a potent reminder that living life more fully is not about getting ahead... pushing ourselves harder .... shouldering more burdens... Life is about experiencing all the wonderful richness it has to offer. |
