Everything that can be counted does not necessarily count;
everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted.

Bozo criminal this morning comes from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bozo criminal Ralph Simpson
walks into a convenience store there. Instead of using a weapon to demand money, our bozo used a
hold his breath until he passed out and then he'd sue the store for being injured on the premises. The
attendant simply laughed at the bozo. He held his breath until he turned red, probably more from
embarrassment than lack of oxygen. When it became obvious his plan wasn't working, he headed for
the door where he ran smack into an off duty police officer stopping by to pick up a cup of coffee.

1856 ~ Know-Nothings convene in Philadelphia
The American Party, also known as the "Known-Nothing Party," convenes in Philadelphia to nominate its first
presidential candidate. The Know-Nothing movement began in the 1840s, when an increasing rate of immigration led
to the formation of a number of so-called nativist societies to combat "foreign" influences in American society. Roman
Catholic immigrants from Ireland and Italy, who were embraced by the Democratic Party in eastern cities, were
especially targeted. In the early 1850s, several secret nativist societies were formed, of which the "Order of the
Star-Spangled Banner" and the "Order of United Americans" were the most significant. When members of these
organizations were questioned by the press about their political platform, they would often reply they knew nothing,
hence the popular name for the Know-Nothing movement.

1885 ~ Twain publishes The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
On this day in 1885, Mark Twain publishes his famous--and famously controversial--novel The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn. Twain (the pen name of Samuel Clemens) first introduced Huck Finn as the best friend of Tom
Sawyer, hero of his tremendously successful novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). Though Twain saw Huck's
story as a kind of sequel to his earlier book, the new novel was far more serious, focusing on the institution of slavery
and other aspects of life in the antebellum South.

1930 ~ Pluto discovered
Pluto, once believed to be the ninth planet, is discovered at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, by
astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh.

1964 ~ United States punishes nations for trading with Cuba
The United States cuts off military assistance to Britain, France, and Yugoslavia in retaliation for their continuing trade
with the communist nation of Cuba. The action was chiefly symbolic, but represented the continued U.S. effort to
destabilize the Cuban regime of Fidel Castro.
Life is Fine
                          by Langston Hughes

I went down to the river,
I set down on the bank.
I tried to think but couldn't,
So I jumped in and sank.

I came up once and hollered!
I came up twice and cried!
If that water hadn't a-been so cold
I might've sunk and died.

But it was   Cold in that water!
It was cold!

I took the elevator
Sixteen floors above the ground.
I thought about my baby
And thought I would jump down.

I stood there and I hollered!
I stood there and I cried!
If it hadn't a-been so high
I might've jumped and died.

But it was  High up there!
It was high!

So since I'm still here livin',
I guess I will live on.
I could've died for love--
But for livin' I was born

Though you may hear me holler,
And you may see me cry--
I'll be dogged, sweet baby,
If you gonna see me die.

Life is fine!  Fine as wine!
Life is fine!
Each morning puts a man on trial and each evening passes judgment.

The key to abundance is gratitude. When we are truly thankful for the good things we
have... the good things we have grow more numerous and more valuable.
Soooo... exactly how do we put gratitude into action?
We put gratitude into action by making the most of all the good things we have.

If we hide and our blessings ... they loose value.. they begin to wither and die.. and
eventually they will disappear completely. On the other hand, when we put all these good
things in our life to full use ... they multiply many times over.

The very best way to our thankfulness ... to show our appreciation for something is to
use it for a positive ...  productive... and creative purpose. When we do that... the value
we already have grows... and grows... and becomes even more valuable.

Whatever we have is not really ours unless we are truly thankful we have it.
To be truly and effectively thankful we must make full and fruitful use of it.

When we live with thankfulness in our heart... in our thoughts...
and, most importantly, in our every action....
All the good things we make use of ... will grow even better.
